The very first thing you want to do when determining when to change your oil is to check your owner’s manual, which can usually be done online if you no longer have your manual. While it’s true that the type of oil you have in your vehicle and how you drive your vehicle both play large parts in when you should change your oil, you’ll want to see what the manufacturer says. You may have a special engine that can go longer between changes or one that needs more frequent changes. Oil Type
Another factor that determines how often you should change your oil is the type of oil you use. With conventional or semi-synthetic, it’s best that you have your oil changed anywhere between every 3,000 and 4,000 miles. With synthetic oil, you’ll want to aim for every 5,000 to 6,000 miles. Be sure you keep up with the type of oil you use and make sure the two are never mixed.
As you’re deciding which type of oil to get, you might also want oil with special properties. For instance, if your car is an older model or has several thousand miles, there are special types of oils designed for cars with high mileage. There are also oils with an anti-wear film designed to increase the overall life of your engine. No matter which type of oil you get, make sure it’s from a quality brand and that you know whether it’s conventional, semi-synthetic or full synthetic.
Driving Habits
The way you drive and where you drive also determine how often you’ll need an oil change. If you don’t drive your vehicle very often, then you more than likely won’t need an oil change as often as most people. Conditions that often warrant an oil change every 3,000 miles or so include:
- Severe climate conditions
- Making frequent trips of less than 10 miles
- Using your vehicle for towing
- Driving in dusty conditions
- Stop-and-go traffic
